Industrial pins are varieties of fastening hardware meant to couple, align, mount, assemble, secure, lock or penetrate two workpieces mainly in automobile and industrial machinery sectors. The operation of the pin depends on design and employment, but industrial pins can be categorized into several categories, such as: hitch and lynch pins; cotter pins and wire clips; spring pins; locating and fixing pins; and specialty pins.

Split Cotter Pins – DIN 94
A split pin, also known as a cotter pin or cotter key, is a metal fastener with two tines that are bent during installation, similar to a staple or rivet. Typically made of thick wire with a half-circular cross section, split pins come in multiple sizes and types.
Metric DIN 94 Split Pins (Cotter Pins) are common used fasteners that hold assemblies together. Made of soft metal wire looped on itself so the two resulting tines can be inserted into a pre-drilled hole and bent to keep it in place. Cotter pins are typically made of soft metal allowing for easy installation and removal. However, this also makes them poor locking devices when strong shear forces are expected.

Solid Dowel Pins – DIN 7
Dowel pins are also referred to as parallel pins and are commonly used to retain parts in a fixed position or to preserve alignment.
Metric DIN 7 parallel dowel pins are solid cylindrical rods made of a variety of materials that are used to strongly and accurately join two or more objects together. Parallel dowel pins are able to join parts together by frictional forces between the pin and material into which it is inserted. In order to keep the assembled parts aligned, the dowel pin must be rigid and fit tightly into the pre-drilled holes of the mating parts.

Spring Dowel Pins – DIN 1481
Spring Dowel pin has a diameter greater than the drilled hole into which its pressed. When inserted into the hole, the elasticity of the material allows it to exert a continuous radial force over the full length of the pin. The slot in the pins allow compression when the pin is inserted in the hole.

Headed Grooved Pins – DIN 1476
Grooved pins are solid pins with three swaged grooves at 120° pitch along all or part of their length. When the pin is driven into a drilled hole of suitable diameter, the material displaced by the grooving process is forced back, to partially close up the grooves and lock the pin into place.
Advantages of grooved pins:
- They do not need a precision reamed hole.
- They can have parallel grooves or tapered grooves.
- Parallel grooves give the pin high resistance to vibration, but need more force to insert.
- They can be grooved on only part of the length, so that where the pin has to be firmly fixed in one part of an assembly, but be a clearance fit on the other, both parts can be drilled to the same diameter.
- Round head pins are widely used for fastening light metal or plastic parts to heavier members.
- They replace screws, rivets, peened pins and other types of fasteners in applications such as attaching name plates, covers, brackets, spring etc.
- The standard stud has a round head, Three parallel grooves impressed on the shank of the stud provide the same positive, vibration and shock-free holding.
